In 1906, Zino Davidoff, founder of the label, was born into a family of tobacco merchants. The Davidoff family moved from Kiev to Geneva in 1911 because of anti-Semitic pogroms. As a young boy, he learned how to mix pipe tobacco and cigarettes in his father Henri's tobacco shop in Geneva, "Davidoff of Geneva". On his journey through Central America and Cuba, he gained knowledge of cigar production, made his first contacts and helped with field work. He brought all these impressions and the knowledge he had gained into his parents' tobacco business. The introduction of the first air-conditioned humidor was a groundbreaking step in cigar storage and underlined Davidoff's pioneering spirit. Shortly before the Germans conquered Paris, he had acquired a stock of around two million Havanas stored there.
The now forty-year-old acquired the license for his first in-house series after the end of the war. The names after noble wineries underlined the demand for the highest quality. It all started with Château Latour in 1946.
In 1970, Zino Davidoff sold his company to the Basel-based company Oettinger Imex AG, but without really retiring. He became the global ambassador for the Davidoff brand.
