Meerschaum pipes originate in Turkey. After the introduction of tobacco, meerschaum pipes were smoked in the Ottoman Empire. They are impressive in their purity and charisma. They also have a number of advantages. Meerschaum pipes do not need to be smoked in. They are fire-resistant, tasteless, particularly easy to work with and absorb a huge amount of moisture. However, pipes made of meerschaum are easily breakable.

Meerschaum is a magnesium silicate that is mainly mined in Turkey around the city of Eskisehir. It is called sepiolite. In order to be able to use the special properties of meerschaum in a wooden pipe, there are pipes with meerschaum inserts. They retain the taste and are also cheaper than pure meerschaum pipes.

Pressed meerschaum or Viennese meerschaum has a much lower smoke quality. These are meerschaum remnants in various sizes that have been pressed into one piece using an emulsion.
