Without filter:
A pipe can be smoked with as well as without a filter. If you have a pipe with the space for a filter, you can also not insert the filter and smoke filterless that way. The other way around obviously doesn´t work. The bore in filterless pipes isn´t big enough.
When you smoke fiterless, the smoke hits the oral cavity direct and
unhindered. This will cause the smoke to be hot, moist and intensive. There are quite a few pipe smokers that prefer to smoke filterless. Nearly the whole world smokes filterless. Germany is the exception. But also in this country, some pipe smokers swear on filterless smoking. The taste experience is felt a lot more clearer and differentiated than with a filter.
A noticable difference is the pulling bahavior. Without a filter, the pull is pretty light and directly controllable. You can feel too hot smoke immediately on the tongue.
Filter material - Paper filter, balsa filter, meerschaum filter, activated carbon filter
The filter effect is different depending on the material, amount and structure and works differently in the spectrum of effect. The esaist type of filtering is the paper filter. The smoke is passing nearly unhindered through the filter. Humidity amd bigger particles alre absorbed or rahter blocked. The tongue tolerates the temperatue of dry smoke most of the time better.
The balsa filter is made of a highly absorbent piece of balsa wood. It is perfectly tailored for the filter chamber and has side channels through which the smoke flows. The remaining smoke passes through the filter. The balsa filter is capable of absorbing a considerable part of the condensates and pollutants. The balsa filter is the perfect choice for sensitive tongues that still want to perceive the entire spectrum of a tobacco.
The meerschaum filter contains small shards of meerschaum in a paper sleeve, which are closed at the front and back by perforated caps (usually made of ceramic). Usually, no smoke can can pass the filter with this kind of filtering. Merschaum is a rare and porous silicate, which is mostly mined in turkey. It is very absorbent and can also also absorb condensates, tars and other pollutants. It is also very neutral to the taste. In addition, the paper cover also absorbs moisture.
The most common pipe filter material is the activated carbon filter. The structure is the same as the meerschaum pipes. the onlx difference is that the paper cover contains activated carbon pieces. Activated carbon is a proven material used for cleaning of liquids and gas. The smoke also gets cleand in this filter. Depending on the size of the pores and amount of activated carbon build different strong filter characteristics. So not every actiavted carbon filter is the same.
Filter sizes - 3mm, 4mm, 6mm, 9mm, special sizes
The filter size depends on the bore of the pipe. Common are 6mm and 9mm but there are also 3mm, 4mm and diverse special sizes, that are very rare.
For small bores, consider the pulling resistance, which can increase inormously with a strong filter.
further filter options - filter crystals, filter stones, sieves, filter granulas
In addition to inserting the filter piece between the handle and the mouthpiece, there are many other filter options. These are mainly realized by inserting them into the head.
Before filling with tobacco, the filter is placed in the bottom of the pipe. Porous filter crystals and merschaum granules have proven their worth here. But sieves and rocks have also proved their uses.
